In a welcome move for consumers, the Union Cabinet announced a reduction of ₹200 in the price of a 14.2 kg LPG cooking gas cylinder ahead of Raksha Bandhan, aiming to alleviate financial pressures amid concerns about rising inflation.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur shared, “As a gesture for Raksha Bandhan and Onam, the government has decided to lower the cost of domestic cylinders by ₹200. He states that it is a special gift from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the women across the nation.”
The price reduction also extends to beneficiaries enrolled in the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).
Currently, a 14.2kg LPG cylinder in the national capital is priced at ₹1,103. Starting Wednesday, the cost will decrease to ₹903.
For those benefiting from the PM’s Ujjwala scheme, the revised price will be ₹703. In March, the government had extended a ₹200 subsidy per LPG cylinder under the PM Ujjwala scheme.
Thakur also revealed, “The government is committed to providing 75 lakh new LPG connections free of cost through the Ujjwala scheme.” Currently, the scheme benefits 9.6 crore individuals.
In July, oil marketing companies had raised the price of domestic LPG cylinders by ₹50, following two increases in May.
The subsidy for PMUY beneficiaries was initiated in May of the previous year, aligning with the government’s measures to ease the impact of soaring global energy prices.
The move to lower LPG cylinder prices comes as a timely relief to households, especially during the festive season, as concerns about rising inflation have been gaining prominence. This decision reaffirms the government’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of citizens and addressing their economic concerns.
