Recently Google has taken a big decision to provide spare for its Pixel 8 series for upto 7 years.
Google’s Director of Product Management, Soniya Jobanputra, shared the following information with FoneArena blog.
Parts will be available for seven years. That’s part of our commitment as we go to the seven years (sic) that we need to make our parts available so you can keep your hardware alive for that long.
Soniya Jobanputra, Director of Product Management at Google, confirmed this decision in an interview with Android Authority. While specific details are yet to be disclosed, it is anticipated that customers can obtain Pixel 8 parts through Google’s partner, iFixit, a renowned repair website based in the United States.
iFixit has a track record of offering parts and comprehensive repair guides for previous Pixel models. They also provide genuine parts for Pixel 2 through the Pixel 6 series. This initiative is timely, coinciding with California’s new right-to-repair law. Under this legislation, companies are obligated to make repair parts, information, and software available for seven years for products costing over $100.
Google’s commitment to ensuring the availability of spare parts throughout the Pixel 8 series’ lifespan is particularly vital for components like the battery. Most smartphone batteries tend to degrade by approximately 20% after about two years of use. Hence, the ability to purchase a replacement battery when needed is crucial for maintaining optimal phone performance over seven years.
While specific information about the availability of these parts is yet to be disclosed, Google’s dedication to offering such support bodes well for users concerned about the longevity and repairability of their Pixel 8 smartphones. Stay tuned for further updates and announcements from Google regarding this commendable initiative.
