Indian Smartphone Manufacturing
In a recent update, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics, and Information Technology, shared that India’s mobile industry has undergone significant changes in the last nine years. The minister announced the outcomes of a meeting with important figures in the mobile sector.
According to Vaishnaw, India’s mobile industry has grown 20 times in the last nine years. In 2014, the country relied on mobile imports by 78%, but now, an impressive 99.2% of all mobiles sold in India are ‘Made In India.’
The minister shared a graph showing that India’s smartphone production value has increased from Rs. 18,900 Cr to an impressive Rs. 3,50,000 Cr for the years 2022–2023. This growth is thanks to the expansion of local smartphone manufacturing.
A crucial factor behind this growth is the Government of India’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for mobile handsets, which has boosted local manufacturing.
Additionally, the production of newer iPhones in India has played a significant role, with Apple suppliers expressing their commitment to the country. The recent entry of Tata Groups is expected to further strengthen operations.
India is now becoming a strong assembly hub, and there are optimistic hopes for it to evolve into a major manufacturing hub in the future, bringing new opportunities for the nation.
This remarkable growth in the mobile industry is a testament to India’s increasing self-reliance and capabilities. The shift from being heavily dependent on mobile imports to being a major contributor to global smartphone production showcases the success of initiatives like the PLI scheme.
With more international players joining the Indian market and committing to local production, the landscape is evolving rapidly. The presence of well-established companies like Apple and the entry of Tata Group signal not only economic growth but also the country’s attractiveness as a manufacturing destination.
This surge in smartphone production not only boosts the economy but also provides employment opportunities, fostering a more sustainable and resilient ecosystem. As India positions itself as a prominent player in the global manufacturing arena, it opens doors to a brighter and more self-sufficient future.
