Instagram, a subsidiary of Meta, has introduced a useful feature allowing users to download reels from public accounts. This function empowers users to save reels to their camera roll, with a few nuances worth noting.
Downloading Reels on Instagram: Accessibility
For public accounts, anyone on Instagram can download and share your reels unless you modify your settings. Users under 18 with public accounts will have downloading disabled by default, but they have the option to enable it.
Private accounts, in contrast, provide enhanced privacy. No one on Instagram can download your reels unless you switch your account to the public. Even if a reel isn’t eligible for offline viewing, it can still be saved for in-app viewing.
Important Considerations
- Only new reels can be downloaded for public accounts unless you modify your download settings.
- Downloaded reels feature an Instagram watermark, showcasing the username and audio attribution.
- Changes to download settings won’t impact copies of Reels already downloaded on a device.
- Downloaded reels may include original audio if the original had the download option.
- Using downloaded reels for commercial purposes is discouraged, and Instagram can’t regulate their use post-download.
Availability
Initially launched in the U.S. earlier this year, the Reels download feature has now gone global, with the rollout commencing on November 23rd.
This move by Instagram reflects a commitment to user convenience and content accessibility. As the platform evolves, it’s essential for users to stay informed about these features to make the most of their Instagram experience. For content creators, understanding the implications of downloaded reels, including watermarks and usage restrictions, is crucial to navigating the evolving landscape of social media platforms.

You can now save Reels from public accounts to your camera roll. Each downloaded Reel comes with a watermark showcasing the creator’s Instagram handle. Originally launched in the US earlier this year, this feature is now accessible worldwide.
Simply tap the Share icon on a Reel and select Download. Public accounts have the option to disable downloads. If a particular Reel isn’t downloadable, don’t worry—just tap the three dots and Save it for later viewing in the app.
